Jhené Aiko Efuru Chilombo (born March 16, 1988 in Los Angeles, CA), well-known for her stage name, Jhené Aiko or simply Jhené, is an American singer-songwriter, who previously offered vocals for former R&B group, B2K, and appeared in several music videos. To promote Jhené, Sony and Epic Records made her known as "Lil' Fizz's cousin," although she is not related to him in real life. Aiko originally was slated to release her previous debut album, My Name is Jhené in 2003 through Sony, The Ultimate Group, and Epic, but the album was shelved for Jhené to depart from Sony to focus on her education. Jhené has three older siblings, whom two are singers as well, including Miyoko, Jamila (also known as Mila J), and Miyagi, who died from cancer in July 19, 2012.

Souled Out is the debut studio album by American R&B recording artist Jhené Aiko, released on September 9, 2014 by Def Jam and ARTium Recordings. After leaving Epic Records in 2003, Aiko took a hiatus from her music career and returned in 2011, with the release of her debut mixtape Sailing Soul(s). After raising her profile with the mixtape, Aiko met with record producer No I.D., and subsequently secured a recording contract with his newly found record label imprint, Artium.

An anticipated release, the album was released to commercial and critical success. The album debuted at number three on the US Billboard 200, selling 70,000 copies doubling the first week sales of her debut EP; the album also debuted at number one on the US Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums and US R&B Albums. Upon its release, Souled Out received generally positive reviews from music critics, who commended its production, lyrics and themes.
